We are continueing to borrow hundreds of millions DAILY just to service the debt.
NEWSFLASH…..the corruption and greed in Washington DC guarentees we will never pay the money back.

Why do Americans think we are wealthy is because we have material stuff that is why. Better question would be is materialism a sign of being wealthy? In fact what is wealthy?
wealthy could mean to have great wealth in knowledge.

wealth is assets
individuals in the US have more assets then any one else. If you are going to include paying back debt then you must include potential assets of the future and again individuals in the US have more since the debt can be extended out to infinity since the US has a nearly zero chance of default means debt can always be carried forward since there is always someone willing to hold it.
Now, that does not mean it will always be the case, but that is the way it is at this point in time.
The US government does not really borrow just to service the debt, the gov borrows to cover operating costs a part of which is debt service but it is incorrect to single that particular item out as the reason it borrows.
